Feb. 15 (UPI) — Norway won the men’s 4×7.5km cross-country relay in Italy on Sunday, netting Johannes Klaebo a record ninth Winter Olympic medal.

With the victory, the 29-year-old now has four gold medals at the Milano Games and a total of nine Olympic medals, making him the most decorated athlete in Winter Olympic history.

To reporters following the race, Klaebo said the relay was “the perfect way” to break the Winter Olympic record.

“Being Norwegian and being able to win the relay is kind of something we need to do,” he said. “So, we were kind of disappointed in Beijing when we got the silver, so now we’re finally back on the top again, and for me to be able to win my ninth one here with the team, it’s unbelievable.”

The Norwegian team of Klaebo, Emil Iversen, Martin Loewstroem Nyenget and Einar Hedegart finished with a time of 1 hour, 4 minutes and 24.5 seconds, just 22.2 seconds faster than the second-place France and 47.9 seconds ahead of Italy, which took the bronze.

Klaebo has a chance to add even more hardware at these Games as he is the favorite in the men’s team sprint on Wednesday and Saturday’s 50km classic race.

Asked if he had enough left in the tank to take two more medals, Klaebo responded that he hoped so.

“We’ll see. I’m going to try again on Wednesday, and then we’ll see where we end up at the end,” he said.
